Types of Cubelets
Cubelets are sold in different types of packs. The most affordable come in the student packs, but the most Cubelets are included with bigger sets, such as the Mini Makers Pack. These include Cubelets for larger classrooms that need to supply blocks to two ore more student groups at a time.
Each Cubelet uses the operating system Cubelets OS 4, which connects and communicates between the blocks. This is a unique operating system that can respond faster to all of the things happening in the world around them, such as light or data reception. You can also use your phone as a remote control. Your Cubelet robot responds in real-time.
So how do you build with these blocks? How many are there? There are few different types of blocks, and each has different properties and colors.
With a Battery Cubelet, you can do all sorts of things. Typically, these attach to a Knob Sense Cubelet and a Flashlight Action Cubelet. These are different types of Cubelets available with the kits.
While Cubelets are sold individually, the best value comes from purchasing them in packs where you get up to five or more blocks. Here are a few of the Cubelets you can purchase with your pack:
These are the Cubelets that have different abilties, such as a Brightness Sense Cubelet. When combined with a Knob Sense Cubelet, you can dim the Flashlight Action Cubelet.
This orange Cubelet includes a knob that allows you to alter the behavior of your creation. It outputs a value of zero until the input exceeds the threshold set by the knob. You can use the Cubelet to react in real-time to data flow and exhibit binary reactions.
These are the green Cubelets that work as a data barrier. This means that it can block data from neighbors. While power can still flow through this block, it will block communication from all other Cubelets. This is useful when you want to build a robot with multiple functions that can’t interfere with one another.
Black Sense Cubelets
These are special Cubelets that sense the surroundings and turn those readings into a number. For example, the Knob Sense Cubelet can sense how much you turn the knob, so if you turn all the way to the left, then the Knob will provide a small number.
Each Sense Cubelet is able to provide a number and share it with all of the neighboring Cubelets. These numbers flow from one Cubelet to the next to communicate. However, they don’t flow through Sense Cubelets, which produce their own numbers.
Each pack comes with one or more Bluetooth hats. You can use these hats to let your robots and devices communicate wirelessly. These are smaller pieces than the Cubelets and need to only attach to one block to work properly.
You can change and re-program Cubelets using Windows PC, MAC, and mobile apps. The THINK Cubelets are the colored blocks that work.
Who are Cubelets For?
Anyone can use Cubelets, but they are mostly for teachers and students. Since they are unique and easy-to-learn, they can also be used for personal robots, especially when you want kids to learn at home.
All skill levels can use Cubelets as well. While builders can learn new lessons through the apps, there are plenty of ways to build on your own and develop new skills as you go.
How Cubelets are Programmed
You can use a Bar Graph Action Cubelet to show you what numbers are flowing to each Cubelet. Once you snap the Bar Graph Action Cubelet to any other Cubelet in the robot chain, the Bar Graph Action Cubelet shows how big those numbers are.
If the number is big, then all the cells in the bar graph will light up. However, if the number is small, then only a few of the bars will light up. If the number is quite small, then zero to 1 or 2 bars may show.
While you don’t need the Bar Graph Cubelet to show you what’s going on, it’s helpful when you have a much larger robot chain that you’re working with, especially when over 5 or 6 Cubelets.
It also makes a difference in how you arrange these Cubelets. You want them to all work together and allow the numbers to flow from one piece to the next. This means that the robot uses a Drive Action Cubelet for the most part.
You can attach the Drive Action Cubelet to different parts of Robot to make it drive in different directions. For example, if you place a Brightness Sense Cubelet with the sensor facing down, it won’t be able to detect light. Therefore, it will stay in place.
Cubelets are little blocks of software inside little blocks of hardware. Each Cubelet has a special function, so how you assemble your robot changes its behavior. Every combination is a new creation.
When you’re just getting started, you may want a variety of Cubelets with different properties. You’ll also need specific Cubelets, such as a Battery Cubelet and a Drive Action Cubelet.
These are the basic building blocks to your first robot. The Modular Robotics Cubelets Discovery Set is the smallest set in the “individual working groups” category. These sets are specifically designed for a group of students.

If you have a circuit station, you can use the Cubelets Discovery Set to build a basic driver robot, such as a train. These sets are designed for younger age groups and offer five Cubelets to work with. One group of three to five students can work with one Discovery Set.
It also includes a Bluetooth Hat and Cubelet app access. You can inspire builders for hours with this one set. Each block contains a little bit of software and hardware, and each will also have a special function.
However you decide to assemble the robot will dictate how it behaves and what it can do. Every combination offers a whole new way to build.
With five Cubelets, you can build with Sense, Action, and Think Cubelets. These each have magnetic faces that simply snap to one another for easy connections and building.
The Cubelet Discovery Pack offers delightful play for one group of students. You can learn the basics of robot creation and coding with these blocks, which are best for beginners.
With multiple discovery sets, students can interact and build much larger robots as well. There are some modrobotics Cubelets missing with these packs, so you may not be able to create the most complex robots.
If you want to upgrade to a larger set with more blocks, which allows for more complex robots, then the Cubelets Curiosity Set is perfect for your student group. There are 10 Cubelets included with this set.

How to Use Cubelets?
Each Cubelet has a property, which are denoted by color. When you attach a Battery Cubelet to a Sense and Action Cubelet, you’re able to power up the robot. This allows it to drive or turn on lights, but there are also robots that make noises. You can even create your own custom robot actions using the app.
It’s important to know that one sense Cubelet can control more than one Action Cubelet. This means that if you want to build a simple train bot, for example, then you can use a Drive Action Cubelet.
However, when you add a Brightness Sense Cubelet, then it will move in light only. If you add a Speaker Action Cubelet, it can chirp when it senses lights as well. These are some of the basic ways to attach the Cubelets together to create different possibilities.
Things get much more complicated when you use the app to change the properties of the Cubelets. You can add multiple Action Cubelets so that your train is able to move in different directions, or you may want it to stay stationery using a Brightness Sense Cubelet that is facing down.
The colored Cubelets are called THINK Cubelets. These have different attributes as well, such as the red inverse Think Cubelet. You can place them between different Sense and Action Cubelets to make the robot flow between its blocks. This means that your robot can turn on lights, while also moving based on how it senses light.
What are Cubelets made from?
With plastic parts, copper wires, and magnets, you can build anything. Cubelets are made from magnets. Modular Robotics produces the safest magnetic toys ever produced.
Is it possible to program a Cubelet?
There are multiple ways to change the attributes and program your Cubelet robots to take different actions. You can use Cubelets Flash or Cubellets Blockly on Windows PC or Mac. You can connect all of your Cubelets to these programs using Bluetooth or USB.
What age is appropriate for Cubelets?
Modular Robotics designed Cubelets for kids as young as eight years old. However, Cubelets are appropriate for kids and adults of all ages.
Modular robotics Cubelets are fun to play with at any age, and they offer a variety of attributes that you can swap out and play with. This creates hours of endless fun just learning about coding blocks and how to create different actions or senses.
